Accidents can happen, and when they involve your child's teeth or mouth, it's important to know how to respond swiftly and appropriately. Dental emergencies can range from a knocked-out tooth to a sudden toothache or injury. These situations require immediate attention to ensure your child's comfort, prevent further damage, and promote quick healing. The faster you seek out care for your child, the more proactive you can be about preventing additional complications.
- Knocked-Out Adult Tooth: If your child's adult tooth has been completely knocked out, it's crucial to act quickly. Handle the tooth carefully by the crown (top), avoiding touching the roots. Rinse it gently with water if it's dirty, but do not scrub it, as this can interfere with your tooth’s ability to heal properly. If possible, try to reinsert the adult tooth into its socket and have your child bite down on a clean cloth to hold it in place. If that isn’t an option, keep the tooth in a sealed container, completely covered with milk or saline, and bring it straight to our office.
- Toothache: Persistent toothaches can be caused by anything from cavities to fractured teeth or abscesses. Have your child rinse with warm salt water and gently floss around the tooth to check for any impacted food that might be contributing to their discomfort. Avoid placing aspirin or any painkiller directly on the gums; however, Motrin (ibuprofen) can be taken as directed.
- Broken or Chipped Tooth: If your child has a broken or chipped tooth, rinse their mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the area to reduce swelling. If possible, save any broken tooth fragments and bring them to your emergency appointment.
Dr. Bret Lesavoy and our dedicated team have extensive experience in providing specialized care for children of all ages, from infancy to adolescence. We understand the unique needs and concerns of young, growing smiles, and our compassionate approach ensures that your child receives the best possible care to get them out of pain as quickly as possible.
